The increasing growth of Internet of Things (IoT)applications induces the need for easy integration of third-partyperipherals, which is restricted in present IoT devices. In this paper,we present a novel plug-and-play (PnP) solution for the abovestated problem. The proposed PnP solution, named SensPnP, isthe combination of embedded hardware and firmware that hasthe capability of integrating third-party embedded sensors withthe IoT devices without any prior information about the sensorsand the Internet. We present an architecture of a PnP-enabledIoT device, which supports heterogeneous embedded peripheralcommunication protocols. A novel embedded protocol detectionapproach for enabling seamless integration of sensor with IoTdevice is proposed. To enable sensor communication, we proposean algorithm for automatic driver management of the connectedsensor with an IoT device. This is achieved through a lowcostand low power switching and identification hardware witha light-weight identification and driver management firmwarestack. To show the effectiveness of the proposed solution, wepractically implemented a prototype in a real test-bed. Theanalysis of the PnP time, protocol identification time, the memoryfootprint, lifetime, and overall cost of the proposed PnP solutionunder different operating conditions establishes superiority ofits circuitry and firmware. Experimental results show thatSensPnP requires minimal memory footprint, reduced energyconsumption, and reduced PnP time compared to the existingsolutions. Additionally, the overall cost analysis shows that thecost of SensPnP is noticeably less compared to existing solutions.Thus, the cost-efficiency of SensPnP makes it more acceptable tothe consumers when compared with existing solutions.
